This Ordinary Council Meeting marked the opening of Council for the year of 2026.

Notable were the inclusion of a new agenda point ("Answers to questions of which notice has been given"), the mayor's speech and the fact - although it seems customary - no actual business was discussed at this meeting.

Below is a short breakdown of what this means for Walvis Bay residents.

Key Decisions at a Glance

No decisions were taken at this meeting. Considering that Council has been in recess since the meeting on 6 December 2025, this is not surprising. However, with the rising mountain of problems Walvis Bay is facing, it may be worth looking into how next year's recess and opening Council Meeting can be utilised effectively so that progress doesn't stall.

What This Means for Residents

With the week of 2 February 2026 slated for introductions and meetings with municipal staff, and the official inductions (a week of training for all new Councillors) coming up from 16-20 February, the next Council Meeting may be postponed.

While it's understandable that getting a new Council up and running takes time, it does mean that we will likely have to wait another month or two to get real feedback on pressing infrastructure repairs. The Walvis Bay municipality does not have the best track record in terms of progress updates, so we plan on utilising the systems already available to get their answers on public record.

Our Councillor's View

There are a lot of problems, projects and issues left over from the last years, and new ones keep popping up. Getting on top of them will be a mammoth task, but one that the JWBRA Councillor, Hon. Sharon Roodt, is confident can be done.

Eager to make real progress, she has been working behind the scenes with the rest of Council to at least get an overview of the issues that need to be tackled.

Two things high on our list: Getting the municipality to upload Council Meeting minutes to their website, and acquiring or putting together a project list so we can track progress and delays.

The minutes have not yet been published. Please check back after the subsequent Council Meeting.

What Happens Next?

Hopefully, pressing issues are going to be discussed at the next Management Committee Meeting - these aren't open to the public, but we should hear back at the next Council Meeting. The yearly budget must normally be completed by May, so that will be a topic of discussion soon as well.

The next Walvis Bay Council Meeting is scheduled for 24 February 2026, although it may be rescheduled due to time constraints.
